Glossary of trading terms

The words you'll see on the trading screen and in these articles, in alphabetical order.

Term What it means
Asset What you're trading the price of: a currency pair such as USD/JPY, gold or silver, a cryptocurrency, or a synthetic index. Also called the underlying asset. See Assets you can trade.
Cashback A separate balance credited by Zentrader, for example the welcome cashback. It's also called a bonus or cashback bonus: all three mean the same thing. It's used first when you trade, and you need real funds equal to the trade amount as well.
Close early Settling a trade before its expiry time for the amount quoted on the trading screen. Available on HIGH/LOW trades of 3 minutes or longer and SPREAD trades of 15 minutes or longer. See Can I close a trade early?
Closing price The price of the asset at the expiry time. It decides the result of a HIGH/LOW or SPREAD trade. Also called the expiry price.
Demo account A practice account with virtual funds. The quick demo on the website works without registering.
Entry price The price of the asset at the moment your trade is accepted. On HIGH/LOW, it's the line your trade is judged against. Also called the strike price.
Expiry time How long a trade runs before it's decided, from 15 seconds to 24 hours. Short expiries (On-Demand) run from the moment you buy; fixed-time expiries (Classic) end at set clock times. See Expiry times.
HIGH/LOW A trade on whether the price will finish above (HIGH) or below (LOW) your entry price at expiry. See How does HIGH/LOW work?
Line On TOUCH and SPREAD, the price level your trade is judged against. Two lines appear on the chart, one above the current price and one below, and you choose one. Also called the target line.
Mid price The price we use for every asset: the bid price plus the ask price, divided by two. See How are Zentrader's prices set?
Open trades Trades that haven't expired yet. They're listed in the Open Trades tab under the chart.
Payout What you receive if a trade wins, shown as a percentage of your trade amount (for example 195%) or a multiplier (1.95x). It includes your trade amount. See What is a payout?
Real funds Money you've deposited, plus profits. Separate from cashback.
Slippage The difference between the price you saw and the price your trade fills at. If the price has moved only slightly by the time your order arrives, the trade fills at the new price, so expect small slippage at busy times. If it has moved a long way, the trade is rejected instead.
SPREAD A trade on whether the price will finish beyond a line at expiry: above the upper line (ABOVE) or below the lower line (BELOW). See How does SPREAD work?
Synthetic index An asset whose price is generated by an algorithm at a set level of volatility, so it trades 24/7. VOLX, JUMP and STEP are synthetic indices. See What are synthetic indices?
Tie A HIGH/LOW trade where the closing price equals the entry price. It counts as a loss. Also called a draw. See What decides whether my trade wins or loses?
TOUCH A trade that wins the moment the price touches your chosen line, at any time before expiry. See How does TOUCH work?
Trade amount The amount you put into a trade: ¥500 to ¥100,000 ($5 to $1,000, or the equivalent in your account's base currency). Also called the stake or investment.
Trade history Your settled trades, with the entry price, closing price and result of each. In the History tab under the chart.
