An asset is the underlying security or product on which the price of a option is based upon.
This can be anything from a currency (e.g. Japanese Yen), a commodity (Gold), single stock (Google) or stock indices (Nikkei).
A option or derivative is a way to trade and profit from movements (higher or lower) in an underlying asset.
